Union loses tourney final after big upset of No. 1.
They follow upset of top-ranked team with dud in final
Alex Brink and Tommy Marchin both scored two goals to spark Brown to a 6-3 upset of No. 14 Union in the championship game of the Three Rivers Classic at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.
Coming off their biggest win of the season with a 7-2 victory over topranked St. Cloud State in the first round the night before, the Dutchmen (105-4, 3-4-1) looked sluggish early and fell behind 4-0 in the first 16 minutes of the game.
Marchin got the Bears (5-7-3) rolling with a power-play goal 2:27 into the game. Marchin onetimed a cross-ice pass from Max Gottlieb past Union goaltender Darion Hanson, who was screened on the shot. Marchin had three goals in the tournament.
Brink made it 2-0 Brown seven minutes later with an even-strength goal.
Brink added a shorthanded goal three minutes later when he skated around Brett Supinski and backhanded a shot past Hanson on his stick-side.
Hanson was pulled for Jake Kupsky after Brink’s second goal.
The move did not pay immediate dividends as Zach Guittari beat Kupsky to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Jack Adams scored in the 18th minute to get Union on the board.
Parker Foo dug a puck out of the corner and Adams slid a no-look shot past Brown goaltender Gavin Nieto.
Anthony Rinaldi added more juice to the Union comeback when he pounced on a loose puck and wristed a shot past Nieto 2:42 into the second period.
Lucas Breault slid a rebound through the legs of Nieto midway through the second period to pull Union within a goal.
Jack Gessert quelled the Union uprising when he scored from a sharp angle to the left of Kupsky late in the second period.
Marchin capped the scoring with an empty-net goal late in the game.
Union outshot Brown 40-26.
