Danes’ rally falls short against Bears

Ualbany women go on big run in fourth, but come up short to Maine

Maine moved to 4-0 in the America East Conference with a 76-65 win over visiting Ualbany on Saturday at Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine.

The Black Bears raced out to a commanding 58-39 lead at the end of three quarters but the Great Danes tried to keep it interestin­g by going on a 23-10 run in the fourth to cut the Maine lead to six points, 68-62, with just 3 minutes, 3 seconds remaining in regulation.

But following a Black Bears timeout, Ualbany could only muster three more points in those final minutes while the Maine offense regained its footing to put away the Great Danes.

Amanda Kantzy, who hit a 3-pointer to pull Ualbany within six in the final moments, finished with 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Great Danes. Heather Forster chipped in with 13 points and Kyara Frames added 11 points and six assists for Ualbany, which dropped to 4-12 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Blanca Millan scored 27 and Parise Rossignol had 20 points for Maine, which climbed to 11-6.

The Great Danes head home to battle Umass-lowell at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
