Poulin, Lawrence win titles
Shen, Duanesburg wrestlers tops at Eastern States meet
Shenendehowa’s Stevo Poulin took first place in the 106-pound division at the Eastern States wrestling tournament on Saturday at SUNY Sullivan Community College in Loch Sheldrake.
Poulin clinched the bracket with an 11-0 major decision over Dante Geislinger of Norwich.
Zack Lawrence of Duanesburg took first in the 152-pound bracket, taking a 4-2 decision in his championship match against Danny Mauriello of Hauppauge.
Lawrence’s Duanesburg teammate Charlie Grygas was the only other Section II competitor to make the finals, but Grygas was pinned by Kyle Mosher (South East Cyclones) in 29 seconds to fall in the 160-pound bracket.
Guilderland’s Cameron Durant lost his 182-pound quarterfinal match, an 8-3 decision to Eduard Dzhioev (Franklin D. Roosevelt) and Jake Stangle of Ballston Spa was pinned by Joey Slackman (Commack) in 2:26 in his 285-pound quarterfinal to round out the local competitors on Saturday.
Girls’ basketball: Troy erupted for 25 points in the fourth quarter to rally past host Kingston 53-45 in a nonleague contest. Jakaiya Dewer scored seven of her 13 points in the fourth to help the Flying Horses outscore the Tigers 2513 in the final period to pick up the win. Jenalyse Alarcon had a team-best 14 points for Troy.
Boys’ basketball: Albany Academy coasted to an 83-53 victory over Collegiate. The Cadets raced out to a 46-28 halftime lead and cruised to the finish line for the win. August Mahoney hit seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points while Andre Jackson chipped in with 16 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists for Albany Academy.
