Albany Times Union (Sunday)

‘Battling Editor’ to discuss memoir

-

Longtime Times Union editor Harry Rosenfeld will sit down for an Armchair Conversation & Book Launch with the newspaper’s current editor and vice president, Rex Smith, on Wednesday at the College of Saint Rose.

Rosenfeld, who headed the Times Union’s newsroom from 1978 to 1994 and is now the editorat-large, will discuss his latest memoir, “Battling Editor: The Albany Years.”

The volume follows Rosenfeld’s previous book, “From Kristallnacht to Watergate,” published in 2013, which tracked his life from childhood in Hitler’s Berlin to the newsroom of The Washington Post.

Rosenfeld, now 89, was a key editor during the tumultuous years of the Watergate scandal.

In the new book, Rosenfeld guides readers through the events of the 1980s and 1990s in Albany, when he took the helm of two daily papers — the morning Times Union and the evening Knickerbocker News.

He also chronicles the ever-changing newspaper industry, including the challenge to print journalism, which led to the closure of the Knickerbocker News in 1988.

The event runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the

Touhey Forum in the Lally School of Education, 1009 Madison Ave. in Albany.

A book signing will follow. To register, go to strose. edu/calendar/armchairconversation-book-launchwith-harry-rosenfeld.
