Red Sox rally past Blue Jays
Bogaerts homers, Vazquez scores winner via speed
Xander Bogaerts hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and catcher Christian Vazquez manufactured the winning run with his legs, rallying the Boston Red Sox past the Toronto Blue Jays 9-8 on Saturday night.
Bogaerts’ leadoff shot to center field off closer Anthony Bass (2-3) made it 8-all before Vazquez reached on a fielder’s choice with one out. Vazquez stole second and advanced to third as catcher Caleb Joseph’s throw sailed into center field for an error.
Yairo Munoz hit a dribbler to third, but Travis Shaw’s throw to the plate was off target and Vazquez slid in safely.
Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer, Rafael Devers homered and had three RBIS, and J.D. Martinez and Bobby Dalbec added solo shots for Boston. Mike Kickham (1-0) struck out four in two scoreless innings.
Angels 10, Astros 9: Mike Trout became the Angels’ career home run leader and Jo Adell celebrated with a game-ending, two-run single in the seventh, lifting Los Angeles to a victory over Houston in the first game of a doubleheader. Trout hit career homer No. 300 in the third inning to pass Tim Salmon as the franchise leader.
Indians 4, Brewers 3: Milwaukee closer Josh Hader allowed his first hit of the season, and then gave up Cesar Hernandez’s game-winning single in the ninth inning.
Cardinals 4, Cubs 2: Adam Wainwright pitched six-hit ball into the seventh inning, and
St. Louis beat Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader. Wainwright allowed two runs, struck out six and walked one while improving to 4-0 for the first time in his career.
Reds 6, Pirates 2: Eugenio Suarez hit three homers in a game for the first time in his career, driving in five runs and powering Cincinnati to the victory.
Athletics 8, Padres 4: Ramon Laureano homered to help Sean Manaea win his third straight start, and Oakland snapped a three-game losing streak. Matt Olson hit a two-run triple and new addition Tommy La Stella had an RBI double for the A’s.
White Sox 5, Royals 3: Jose Abreu hit his 13th homer for Chicago in the first inning, and Yasmani Grandal added a tworun shot.
Marlins 7, Rays 3: Sandy Alcantara allowed one run over six innings, Corey Dickerson homered for the second consecutive game and Miami beat AL East-leading Tampa Bay.
Notes: Houston Astros star Jose Altuve was placed on the 10-day injured list due to sprained right knee . ... The Washington Nationals and general manager Mike Rizzo finalized a multiyear contract extension. The 59-year-old Rizzo, who also holds the title of president of baseball operations, built the team that won the 2019 World Series championship. The Nationals have won four NL East titles, most recently in 2017. They won the last season’s World Series after making the playoffs as a wild card.
