Chavis, Bogaerts hit homers to lift Red Sox

Richards gets win vs. Baltimore for first time in 3 tries

Michael Chavis homered in his first start of the season, Xander Bogaerts also connected and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-6 on Saturday night.

Bogaerts and Alex Verdugo each had three hits for the Red Sox.

Chavis was recalled Friday from Triple-a Worcester and took the roster spot of Kike Hernandez, who was placed on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. Chavis started at second and batted leadoff — his only other appearance this season was April 10 against Baltimore as a pinch-runner.

Garrett Richards (2-2) beat the Orioles for the first time in three starts this season, allowing four runs and eight hits over seven innings.

The Red Sox took a 4-1 lead in the second on a single by Hunter Renfroe and a two-run homer by Chavis off Orioles lefthander Zac Lowther, who made his first major league start.

Freddy Galvis cut the lead to 4-2 by leading off the bottom half with a solo shot for the Orioles, who have homered in each of their last nine games.

The Red Sox answered with three runs in the third on an RBI single by Christian Vazquez and a two-run single by Bobby Dalbec off Shawn Armstrong.

Lowther (0-1) was charged with all seven runs over 21⁄3 innings.

Boston opened the fourth with three straight singles and scored two more runs on a grounder by Rafael Devers and a single by Vazquez.

Bogaerts pushed the lead to 11-2 with a two-run homer in the sixth.

Trey Mancini had an

RBI double and scored on a pinch-hit single by Ramon Urias in the sixth, but Bogaerts ended the threat with a nifty grab for an inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play.

Orioles infielder Pat Valaika pitched a scoreless ninth.

Austin Hays managed a two-run single in the ninth off Austin Brice that pulled the Orioles within 11-6.

White Sox 9, Royals 1: Danny Mendick hit a two-run homer during an eight-run first inning for Chicago, and the White Sox beat Kansas City.

Brewers 6, Marlins 2: Adrian Houser brought the heat on the mound and kept his cool circling the bases. The veteran righthande­r struck out 10 in six innings and homered off Daniel Castano for the second time this season, helping Milwaukee snap a sixgame losing streak.

Indians 9, Reds 2: Cesar Hernandez hit a three-run triple and Aaron Civale pitched seven strong innings to stay unbeaten as Cleveland struck back after being no-hit for the second time in 24 days by belting Cincinnati.

Athletics 6, Rays 3: Seth Brown hit a two-run homer in the first inning a day after delivering a walkoff drive, sending Oakland past Tampa Bay.

Giants 7, Padres 1: Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and Austin Slater homered and San Francisco kept rolling at home,

beating San Diego. Cardinals 9, Rockies 8:

Yadier Molina drove in three runs in his return from the injured list, Paul Goldschmid­t homered and St. Louis beat Colorado.

Cubs 3, Pirates 2: Pinch-hitter Matt Duffy had a go-ahead single in the seventh inning, reliever Keegan Thompson pitched three scoreless innings for his first major league victory and Chicago beat Pittsburgh for its fifth straight win.

Tigers 7, Twins 3: Slumping Miguel Cabrera hit a tiebreakin­g single to key a five-run burst in the seventh inning that sent Detroit over Minnesota.

Note: Ronald Acuna Jr., who shares the major league lead with 10 home runs, left Atlanta’s game against Philadelph­ia on Saturday night after being hit by a pitch. Acuna was hit on his left hand by a 98 mph fastball from Sam Coonrod in the seventh inning. The pitch appeared to hit Acuna’s little finger on the bottom of the bat . ... Khris Davis was activated from the injured list Saturday by Texas, marking the slugger’s first time on their active roster for a game since being acquired in trade that sent shortstop Elvis Andrus to Oakland. Davis, an outfielder and designated hitter, opened the season on the injured list because left quad strain suffered in a spring training game March 23.Texas got Davis, catcher Jonah Heim, and a minor league pitcher from the A’s just before spring training Feb. 6 when it sent Andrus to the West Coast.heim was in the starting lineup for Saturday night’s game against Seattle, but Davis was not.
