GUILDERLAN­D — Edward "Pop" J. Balmes Sr., 87 of Guilderlan­d, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at his residence.

Born in Colonie on November 29, 1933, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Edna (Wiley) Balmes. Pop was a lifelong resident of the area graduating from Roseville High School.

He proudly served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. After his time in the military, Pop returned to the area and began working as a carpenter. After over 40 years of dedication, he retired from The Carpenters Union, Local 370, which is now Local

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching boxing and was an avid NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt Sr. Pop was known for his great gardening skills. His green house was filled with beautiful florist quality hanging baskets and tomato plants that he was famous for.

However, the memories that he held closest to his heart were the ones that he spent with his family, especially supporting his granddaugh­ters softball games.

In addition to his parents, Pop was predecease­d by his beloved wife of 42 years, Irene (Boulerice) Balmes, who passed in 2001; and his sister, Lois Baker. He is survived by his children, Debra (Brent) Livingston, Edward (Anne) J. Balmes Jr., and Lisa (Jeffrey) Fountain; his grandchild­ren, Rachael (Tom) Meko, Brent E. (Raylane) Livingston,

Kayley (Nathaniel) Monroe, and Katlyn Fountain, and was expecting the arrival of his first great-grandchild this fall. Pop is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, friends and staff from the Farmer Boy Diner, Colonie Diner and a loving softball community.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 5, at the Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectad­y. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, in the funeral home. Interment will immediatel­y follow in St. John Lutheran’s Cemetery, Colonie.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Pop’s name may be made to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave., Glenville, NY, 12302.
