Program discusses Black Civil War vets

GLOVERSVIL­LE — The Fulton County Historical Society will present “To Arms! To Arms! Black Civil War Veterans of Fulton County,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10.

In January 1863, three months after President Lincoln issued the Emancipati­on Proclamati­on, the federal government began recruiting Black soldiers for the Union Army for the first time. More than 4,100 Black men in New York enlisted to fight.

The program looks at the experience­s of Black veterans in Fulton County before, during, and after the war.

The society is located at 237 Kingsboro Ave., Gloversvil­le.

Free on-street parking is available on Kingsboro Avenue and along Academy Place.
