No. 16 Big Red roll in 3rd

Cornell avoided a lost weekend in the Capital District with a 5-2 victory over host Union on Saturday in a men’s ECAC Hockey clash in Schenectad­y.

The Big Red squad lost a 6-2 decision to RPI on Friday but rallied for four goals in the third period against the Dutchmen on Saturday to escape Messa Rink with a 1-1 split in this weekend’s games.

Cornell, which is 16th in the USCHO.com and 15th in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine rankings, and Union entered the third period deadlocked at 1-1. Kyle Betts quickly ended the tie with his second goal of the evening just 37 seconds into the frame.

The Big Red offense upped their advantage to 3-1 when Cody Haiskanen sent home his first goal of the year exactly seven minutes into the third. Thomas Richter scored his first goal of the season for the Dutchmen at 11:10 of the third period to cut the lead to 3-2.

But Cornell sealed the victory with two more goals, including an empty net tally by Sam Malinski to close out the scoring.

Union’s Josh Kosack gave the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead with a first-period tally before Betts scored his first goal of the night in the second period to send the teams to the third period even at 1.

The Dutchmen travel to Yale on Friday to take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
