A severely injured Rottweiler puppy was found and brought to Mohawk Hudson Humane Society on Monday. Now, the nonprofit is seeking information that could help identify the puppy’s assailant.

According to the nonprofit, a good Samaritan on Monday heard a dog whining and traced the sound back to a box in the parking lot of a gas station near Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Inside the box was traumatized 10- to 12 week-old puppy, who has since been named Deniro by Humane Society staff.

When the puppy arrived, according to the nonprofit, the puppy’s jaw was slack, his tongue discolored and hanging from his mouth, his chest and legs caked in drool and dried blood. His jaw was fractured and ribs were broken in seven locations. Medical imagining indicated that the puppy’s trauma consisted of more than one event.

The shelter is working with law enforcement, and is also asking for the public’s help: For those who live near the RPI campus to check surveillance footage between the evening of Sunday, Feb. 6 and Monday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m., and for residents of Griswold Heights to check doorbell cameras and any other surveillance footage.

On Friday, Deniro underwent a four-hour surgery to repair his jaw. He has plates on both sides with seven screws on the right side and eight on the left holding his little jaw together. The estimate for his first surgery is $11,000, the shelter said. He will have ongoing expenses related to these injuries and is likely to need dental surgery as his teeth begin to grow in. Donations can be made at Deniro Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (mohawkhumane.org).

Those with information may call 518-434-8128, extension 203, or email animalcruelty@mohawkhumanesociety.org.
