Helene Haegerstrand scored 18 points and the winning basket with 16 seconds left as the University at Albany women closed the regular season on a winning note with a 57-56 home win over Stony Brook.

The Seawolves, the preseason favorite to win the America East Conference, fell to second in the league with the loss. Maine, winner of 11 straight including a victory over UAlbany on Wednesday, can clinch the title with a win over Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday.

UAlbany (20-9, 13-5) ended the game on a 13-0 run. Stony Brook (23-5, 14-4) went scoreless over the final five minutes, going 0-for-8 from field. Anastasia Warren missed a 3-pointer with nine seconds left, but Kelis Corley corralled the rebound, giving the Seawolves another chance to pull out the win. On the ensuing possesion, Corley’s driving layup as time expired did not fall, giving UAlbany the win and a split in the season series.

India Pagan led Stony Brook with 18 points.

Stony Brook seemed on its way to a win when the Seawolves ended the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 47-33 lead.

Stony Brook still appeared to be in control when Narimar Vargas-Reyes sank a 3-pointer to give the Seawolves a 56-44 lead with 5:09 remaining, but that would be their final points.
