100 YEARS AGO Women and success
The Times Union’s Inquiring Reporter asked: “Do you think women are making a success in their new freedom?” Cashier Katherine Craven said, “Most assuredly the women in business are successful. They are more attentive to details and are interested in the work.” Grocer Frank Bates said “In a way, they are making too much of a success. The first thing we know they will have all the worthwhile jobs.” The fiercest opinion came from stenographer Marjorie Dayton: “Women are most successful considering the way in which they are held down by many employers who believe the men should be given the best pay and the best jobs, although a woman may do even more and better work than a man.”
