NORTH GREENBUSH

— Efrosini "Effie" G. Frankel of North Greenbush, passed away after a short terminal illness on Saturday, February 26, 2022, in Newton, Mass.

Effie was born on September 9, 1936, in St. Louis, Mo. to the late Nicholas and Irene (Sofios) Galakatos and was a big sister to the late Andrew N. Galakatos. Effie attended Fontbone University in St. Louis and earned a degree in biochemistry. She focused her reasearch on muscle and tissue diseases. Through her early research with a dermatologist in St. Louis, she moved to Albany to continue their reasearch at Albany Medical Hospital. She was nomiminated as an honoree for the Honor Achievement Award for her medical contributions from the Angiology Research Foundation.

Effie and Julius met in Albany at an international dance in 1966 and were married on July 10, 1970. Effie enjoyed gardening, tackling all home repairs (carrying a toolbox in her car), playing tennis, and spending summers at their summer home in Willsboro Bay on Lake Champlain. Effie loved to travel as a young college graduate and throughout her life throughout Asia, Europe, northern Africa, the Mediterranean and Middle East. Survivors include her beloved husband of 52 years, Julius Frankel; her daughter, Liza (Frankel) Guimbard of Watertown, Mass., son-in-law, Alex Guimbard and beloved grandchildren, A.J., Nicholas and Sophia Guimbard.

Her grandchildren were everything to her and she never stopped talking about them. She always went above and beyond to be a supportive mother and Yayah to her family. Her family is comforted by the memory of her beautiful bright smile and love for her family and friends. Effie’s smile shines bright in our hearts and memories we were blessed to have and are comforted in knowing she is at peace. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to send cards, call, leave messages or visit Julius and family in person in Newton. Visits are appreciated while the family sits shiva. Please contact Liza to make arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations made in Effie’s memory to The American Neuromuscular Foundation, 2621 Superior Drive NW, Rochester, MN, 55901 or through foundation @neuromuscularfoundation. org.
