Terrapins’ 24 goals are most by a Great Danes foe in Division I history

The Maryland men’s lacrosse team looked every bit as good as its No. 1 ranking on Saturday morning, scoring a record number of goals by a University at Albany opponent in the Division I era in a 24-6 victory over the Great Danes in College Park Md.

The Terrapins (6-0) took an 11-0 lead after one quarter on their way to surpassing the 23 goals scored against UAlbany by Virginia in a 2005 NCAA Tournament match and by Stony Brook in 2011.

“Honestly, they were really good,” UAlbany coach Scott Marr said. “I haven’t seen an offensive shooting performance like that in, I think, like 2017 when we played North Carolina (in the NCAA Tournament). They didn’t make a mistake. They didn’t miss the goal. They moved the ball really well. … It was one of those Murphy’s Lawtype things. Just everything that could go wrong, went wrong.”

Maryland scored its 24 goals on 35 shots on net and 45 total shots. Thirteen Terrapin players scored, led by Daniel Kelly’s four goals and Jonathan Donville’s hat trick.

The Terrapins also held advantages of 49-23 on ground balls and 23-11 on faceoffs.

The game was moved up two hours to 10 a.m. and moved inside to Jones-Hill House because of forecasted inclement weather. The game was not open to the general public.

“If you want to use it as an excuse, you can, I guess,” Marr said. “We knew we were playing at 10 o’clock. It was just a matter of where. We told the boys last night we’d be playing inside, so we knew what was going on. It wasn’t like we were in the dark and all of a sudden had to go play indoors.”

Corey Yunker had two goals for UAlbany, which fell to 1-4 heading into its America East Conference opener next Satur

day against Binghamton at Casey Stadium.

“I think we certainly have to regroup,” Marr said. “I told the boys after the game we all have to look in the mirror, including myself, and figure out what we’re going to do and how we’re going to approach next week with spring break. We’ve done a lot of different things since the spring, changed our system two or three times … We have to go back to the drawing board a little bit.”

Marr said the Great Danes played better in the second half after Maryland seized an 18-2 halftime lead.

UAlbany was much more competitive in its two most recent trips to Maryland. The Danes beat the Terrapins 11-10 in 2018 and lost 14-13 there two years ago.
