Averill Park girls win regional game

Warriors reach the state semifinals in Class A basketball

The Averill Park girls’ basketball team coasted past Section III champion Bishop Ludden 67-43 on Saturday in its Class A state regional game at Cicero-North Syracuse.

The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and cruised to the finish for the win. Amelia Wood scored 22 points to pace the Averill Park offense.

Wood and the rest of the Section II Class A champions advance to the state semifinal round and will tip off against Section XI champion West Babylon at 11:45 a.m. Friday at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. West Babylon defeated Section VIII’s Plainedge 52-34 in its state regional contest.

Girls’ bowling: Section II closed the State Composite Division championsh­ip with a third-place finish on Saturday in Syracuse. The Section II team totaled 6,137 pins, just 107 away from Section III, which won with 6,244 total pins. Madison Robbins (Bethlehem) rolled a 271 high game and totaled 1,325 pins for a fourth-place finish and Olivia Decitise (Troy) had a 245 high game and 1,303 for fifth place to lead Section II individual­s. Ashley Hardy (Liverpool) of Section III had a 300 game and closed with 1,363 for first place. Boys’ bowling: The boys’ Section II team placed seventh out of 11 teams in the State Composite Division championsh­ip. Section V took first with 6,710 total pins, just ahead of Section XI which was second with 6,676 pins. Section II finished with 6,146 total pins. Jacob Willard (Kenmore) of Section VI bowled a 300 game and closed with 1,469 total pins to post the top individual score. Stephen Zarub (Burnt Hills) had the top Section II individual finish, placing 20th with a 255 high game and totaling 1,260 pins in his six games.

Boys’ hockey: Ryan Schelling scored four goals to lead Suffern of Section I to a 5-3 win over Shenendeho­wa in the Division I state semifinals. The Mounties will play West Genesee of Section III in the championsh­ip game. Schelling got the hat trick to give Suffern a 4-1 lead with 13 minutes to play. Colin Plamer and Nolan Sullivan scored to pull the Plainsmen within a goal with three minutes left, but Schelling netted his fourth of the game with one minute left to seal the win . ... Pelham cruised to a 7-1 victory over Queensbury in the state Division II semifinals to close out the Spartans’ season. Pelham jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second period and never looked back on its way to the win. Nick Ogden scored for Queensbury.
