GUILDERLAN­D — Arthur "Arty" Waugh passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital on Monday, March 7, 2022, with his loving wife, Nancy, by his side. He was deeply loved and respected by everyone who knew him. Arty was born and raised in West Albany, the youngest son of Dick and Laurabel Waugh. He graduated from South Colonie High School and played football and baseball. He continued on to Syracuse University and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts. Arty was a six-year member of the New York National Guard, 210th Armored, fulfilling his service commitment.

Arty’s teaching and coaching career began in 1967 and he retired in 2000. He taught art and coached both football and lacrosse, coaching 45 teams at Guilderlan­d, between the two sports. He was very fortunate to have had three terrific mentors: his department chairman, Bill Jewell, and Bud Kenyon and Russ Ferris. Arty is credited with introducin­g lacrosse to Section 2 in 1976 and there are now more than 30 programs in the area.

Arty was a long-time goalie in the Mohawk Lacrosse League and in many tournament­s. The highlights were the Native American Festival games vs. the Iroquois Nationals, and the years playing at the Lake Placid Summit Lacrosse Tourney.

Arty was inducted into the Adirondack Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2000 and became a Legend of Lake Placid recipient in 2015, for years of successful play. Arty was a 2021 inductee into the Capital Region Football Hall of Fame for his coaching at Guilderlan­d.

Arty and Nancy Broderick were married in the Chapel at UAlbany in 1974 and have shared a wonderful life since. He leaves behind Nancy, the love of his life; niece, Debra Anderson (Chris) and great-niece, Azalea; nephews, Bill Waugh and Dan Carley; and sister-in-law, Pat Carley. He was predecease­d by his parents, brother, Bob; brother-in-law, Jake Carley; and nephew, JB Carley. Nancy would like to thank the Town of Guilderlan­d EMTs, St. Peter’s ER, fifth and sixth floor and the I.C.U. nurses and staff; Dr. Farooq, Dr. Khiangte and Dr. Gold for their compassion­ate care. Arty’s ashes will be spread at locations that have had major impacts upon his life and the remainder will be buried with Nancy. A remembranc­e get-together will be held on Sunday, June 12, from 3-6 p.m. at the Orchard Creek Golf Club Pavilion, 6700 Dunnsville Rd., Altamont.
