Bruins beat Islanders in Bergeron’s 1,200th game

Four-goal second period lifts surging Boston over N.Y.

David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand each had a goal and an assist during a four-goal second period for the surging Bruins, carrying them to a 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Boston captain Patrice Bergeron played in his 1,200th game. He became the 120th player in NHL history to reach that milestone. He returned to the lineup Saturday after missing four games with an elbow infection.

Erik Haula and Jake DeBrusk each had a second-period goal after Craig Smith and Taylor Hall scored in the first for Boston, which earned its 14th win in 16 games. Linus Ullmark made 24 saves for Boston.

Brock Nelson scored his 30th of the season, and Anders Lee and Zach Parise each had a power-play score for the Islanders, who had won four of their previous five. Semyon Varlamov stopped 38 shots for New York.

Devils 4, Capitals 3: Nicklas Backstrom scored the go-ahead goal and then added an assist on the night Washington celebrated his 1,000th career point as the Capitals beat New Jersey. Alex Ovechkin scored his teamleadin­g 42nd goal on a thirdperio­d power play to give Washington breathing room after Backstrom’s sixth of the season put the Capitals in front for the first time just under seven minutes into the period. Connor McMichael and Tom Wilson also scored for the Capitals, who

began the night 14 points ahead of Columbus for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Vitek Vanecek stopped 29 shots. Jack Hughes scored his 22nd goal and added his 30th assist, and Damon Severson and Jesper Bratt also scored for the last-place Devils, who missed a rare chance to secure a seasonseri­es victory over Washington. Nico Daws finished with 18 saves.

Golden Knights 5, Blackhawks 4 (OT):

Evgenii Dadonov scored in overtime and Vegas overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period to beat Chicago. The Golden Knights trailed 3-0 entering the third but got goals from Chandler Stephenson, William Karlsson, Jack Eichel and Alex Pietrangel­o. Dadonov then scored for the second time in two games since returning to Vegas’ roster after the NHL negated a trade that sent him to Anaheim because of his no-trade clause.

Lightning 2, Red Wings 1 (OT):

Brayden Point scored a power-play goal at 2:28 of overtime and Tampa Bay snapped a three-game losing streak. Point scored on a rebound of Steven Stamkos’ shot. Stamkos scored a third-period, power-play goal for the Lightning, while Anthony Cirelli assisted on both goals.

Panthers 4, Senators 3 (SO):

Aleksander Barkov had the tying goal late in the third

period before scoring the shootout winner, helping Florida overcome a three-goal deficit. Anthony Duclair and Patric Hornqvist also scored for Florida, which extended its hold on the Eastern Conference lead. Canucks 4, Stars 1: Elias Petterson had two goals and a pair of milestones as Vancouver rallied past Dallas. Petterson’s second goal was his 20th of the season and the 200th career point for the fourth-year player from Sweden.

Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 2:

Paul Byron broke a tie with 2:28 left, Jake Allen made 49 saves and Montreal beat Toronto.

Wild 3, Blue Jackets 2 (OT):

Jared Spurgeon scored on a give-and-go 1:24 into overtime and Minnesota recovered to beat Columbus and provide MarcAndre Fleury with a victory in his Minnesota debut Saturday night. Fleury, the three-time Stanley Cup winner who has the fourthmost playoff wins in NHL history, stopped 23 shots for Minnesota, which won its fifth straight game. Hurricanes 7, Blues 2: Andrei Svechnikov celebrated his 22nd birthday with two goals, leading Carolina past St. Louis.

Note: The Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Nicholas Abruzzese to a two-year, entry-level contract Saturday. The former Harvard captain and U.S. Olympian was a fourth-round pick in 2019.
