Saints dominate MAAC contest

Siena jumps out to 4-0, defense limits opponents to one goal on 37 shots

Nick Casner and Christian Watts each scored two goals as the Siena men’s lacrosse team earned its first MAAC victory of the season with a 10-1 road win over Monmouth.

Casner scored both of his goals in the first period, the first coming more than eight minutes into the game to break a scoreless stalemate. His second, off an assist from Tyler Menniti, came with 59 seconds left in the quarter and gave the Saints a 4-0 lead.

Watts scored in the second and third quarters to extend Siena’s lead to 7-1. The senior midfielder leads the Saints with 26 goals and 29 points in 10 games. Saints captain Nick Pepe of Watervliet scored his first goal in four games late in the third quarter. He has four goals this year.

Chris Yanchoris made 21 saves to earn the win for Siena (3-5, 1-2). Noah Lode made 17 saves for Monmouth. Monmouth outshot Siena, 45-37, but Siena led 27-22 in shots on goal.

Max Brooks scored the lone goal for Monmouth (4-4, 1-1).

Rocco Barbero and Cole Allen scored their first goals of the season for Siena. It was the first goal for Barbero, a sophomore transfer from Springfiel­d, as a Saints player. It was the second career goal for Allen, a senior, and first in more than a year.
