Partisanship a disturbing, destructive force in U.S.

-

There are times that I am ashamed to be called an American.

This is one of them.

After the Jan. 6, 2021, terrorist assault on our Capitol, I thought nothing would surprise me. Yet, our country is in the throes of a perfect storm: COVID-19, the Black Lives Matter movement, the #MeToo movement, cancel culture, soaring prices and now the distinct possibility of another war with the advent of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The New Hampshire Legislature voted last month on seceding from the Union. It was overwhelmingly voted down, but the disturbing fact is how did this even come to a vote?

Instead of voting to secede from the Union, our legislators (both state and federal) should start tearing down the partisan walls and working together to heal our country. Abraham Lincoln’s “A house divided against itself cannot stand” speech should be engraved on the walls of all our congresses as a reminder of why they were elected in the first place. It seems it’s the first thing they forget.

It breaks my heart what’s happening in our country. I have lived too long.
