Grondahl’s Ortali column captured a lively figure
I don’t usually write fan letters, but I want to express my admiration for Paul Grondahl’s column, “Au Revoir, Ray Ortali, a true bon vivant,” March 30. For many decades, I was Ortali’s friend and colleague, and he was indeed a lively and colorful figure. Grondahl captures, with his characteristic empathy, humor and insight, Ortali’s many characteristics.
Grondahl is an extraordinary journalist, and he’s one of the main reasons I read the Times Union. As the head of the New York State Writers Institute at the University at Albany, Grondahl brings the same energy and enthusiasm to UAlbany. There must be two Grondahls, for I can’t imagine one person doing so many things well. Jeffrey Berman
