Ozuna, Riley lead Braves’ rally in 8th

Atlanta stuns Padres with four runs in 8th

-

Marcell Ozuna homered and Austin Riley hit a tiebreaking double during a four-run rally in the eighth inning Saturday that lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres.

The Braves tagged reliever Steven Wilson (3-1) for Ozzie Albies’ RBI single, Ozuna’s tworun homer and Riley’s go-ahead hit.

The game appeared to turn in San Diego’s favor in the top of the eighth when first baseman Matt Olson misplayed Trent Grisham’s grounder for a twobase error with one out. Grisham advanced on Will Smith’s wild pitch and scored on Jorge Alfaro’s single to tie it at 2.

After Jake Cronenworth doubled, Jurickson Profar drew a walk to set the stage for Braves closer Kenley Jansen (2-0) to face Manny Machado with the bases loaded. Machado hit a grounder to Riley at third base, but his throw to second sailed into shallow center field for an error that allowed two runs to score.

San Diego added another run to make it 5-2 on Eric Hosmer’s RBI forceout.

Padres starter Sean Manaea struck out 12 in seven innings. Every Atlanta batter except for Albies whiffed against Manaea.

Athletics 4, Angels 3: Luis Barrera hit a walk-off, three-run shot for his first career homer and Oakland snapped a seven-game home skid in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Tigers 3, Orioles 0: Tigers starter Michael Pineda exited early after a line drive broke a finger on his pitching hand and the Detroit bullpen dominated the rest of the way, teaming on a fourhitter. Pineda retired all four hitters he faced, but had to leave after Ramon Urias’ liner broke the middle finger on his right hand in the second inning.

Nationals 13, Astros 6: Yadiel Hernandez and Maikel Franco homered and Washington ended Houston’s 11-game winning streak.

Cardinals 4, Giants 0: Dakota Hudson and a quartet of relievers combined to help St. Louis stop San Francisco’s six-game winning streak.

Blue Jays 5, Rays 1: Teoscar Hernandez and Danny Jansen homered in the eighth inning and Toronto beat Tampa Bay to end a five-game skid.

Marlins 9, Brewers 3: Jesus Aguilar, Jorge Soler and Brian Anderson homered, and Miami beat Milwaukee.

Pirates 3, Reds 1: Zach Thompson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Daniel Vogelbach homered to lead Pittsburgh to a victory over Cincinnati.

Guardians 3, Twins 2 (10): Andres Gimenez ripped a go-ahead double in the 10th inning and scored an insurance run after a collision on the bases.

Rockies 10, Royals 4: Charlie Blackmon, Sam Hilliard and Ryan McMahon hit home runs, German Marquez overcame one rough inning for his first victory this season and Colorado snapped a five-game losing skid.

Note: The Astros acquired utilityman Mauricio Dubon in a trade with the Giants. The Giants received minor league catcher Michael Papierski in the deal.
