Events commemorat­e Martin Luther King Jr.

A number of events are planned to celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was born Jan. 15, 1929.

Here are some of them:

Mayor Kathy Sheehan will lead the annual city of Albany’s Martin Luther King Jr. Community March at 11 a.m. Monday. It begins at the Madison Avenue entrance to the Empire State Plaza Concourse, in front of the State Museum entrance. It will conclude at the King Monument in Lincoln Park with a wreath laying ceremony. CDTA will provide a shuttle bus to transport disabled or older people to the memorial and back. Unions, faith communitie­s, civil rights groups and community organizati­ons honor Martin Luther King Jr. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday with a day of service at the Regional Food Bank of Northeaste­rn New York, 965 Albany Shaker Road, Latham. With more than 2.1 million New Yorkers struggling with food insecurity, the unions believe it is their responsibi­lity to help the Food Bank.

The state Education Department and Office of General Services have opened the 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Fine Arts and Essay Exhibition. King’s commitment to nonviolent advocacy served as the inspiratio­n for 3,920 students from more than 100 public and private schools across the state to submit their creations.

Author and professor Michael Eric Dyson will give a talk commemorat­ing Martin Luther King Jr. at 6 p.m. Tuesday, at Nott Memorial, Union College, Schenectad­y. Keynote speaker is Craig S. Andrade, associate dean for practice and director of the activist lab at Boston University’s School of Public Health. The Rev. What’s open, closed for holiday

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed Monday. The following is a partial list of holiday schedule changes:

Banks: Closed Monday.

Buses: CDTA will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule on Monday. There will be no NX service. Routes 523, 524 and 525 will not operate.518482-8822 or http://cdta.org.

Garbage: In Albany, garbage will be picked up as usual on Monday. In Schenectad­y, garbage pickup will be moved forward one day and will stay so until the next holiday. Private contractor­s’ schedules vary.

Government: Most federal, state, city, town and municipal offices will be open Monday.

Libraries: Most area libraries will be open Monday. Schenectad­y County Public Libraries will be closed.

Mail: There will be no pickup or delivery Monday.

Schools and colleges: Closed Monday.

Museums: The State Museum in Albany is closed Mondays.

Shopping: Malls and grocery stores will be open.
