Fried falls to Braves in arbitration
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Pitcher Max Fried lost to the Atlanta Braves in salary arbitration on Saturday, and will make $13.5 million this season instead of his $15 million request. Despite the defeat, Fried matched the $13.5 million Gerrit Cole won in 2019 as the highest decided by an arbitration panel.
Fried went 14-7 and lowered his ERA to 2.48 from 3.04 in 2021. Fried was a first-time AllStar, was second to Miami’s Sandy Alcantara in Cy Young Award voting and was third in the NL in ERA behind Alcantara and Julio Urías of the Dodgers.
Dodgers to retire Valenzuela’s 34
LOS ANGELES — The L.A. Dodgers will retire the No. 34 jersey of pitcher Fernando Valenzuela during a three-day celebration this summer.
Valenzuela won the 1981 Rookie of the Year and Cy Young awards. The six-time All-Star will be honored Aug. 11-13 when the Dodgers host Colorado.
Capitals give Milano 3-year deal

Ryland, Haener top Senior Bowl

Tsurenko reaches Thailand final
HUA HIN, Thailand — Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine reached her first final in four years after the top-seeded Bianca Andreescu retired with a shoulder injury during their semifinal match at the Thailand Open. Tsurenko will face Zhu Lin of China in the final on Sunday. Zhu swept Wang Xinyu 6-2, 6-4 for her first WTA final.

Orange’s McIntyre gets extension
