Djokovic denied vax exemption
Tennis star Novak Djokovic will miss the Miami Open after failing to get an exemption under coronavirus vaccine rules to enter the U.S.
The world No. 1 is not vaccinated against the coronavirus. The Transportation Security Administration requires proof of vaccination from air travelers under a rule in place through at least April 10.
Alcaraz, Medvedev set for clash
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 7-6 (4), 6-3 to advance to the BNP Paribas Open final against Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev beat Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 7-6 (4) on his eighth match point for his 19th consecutive match victory.
Alcaraz needs to win Sunday to regain the No. 1 world ranking from Novak Djokovic.
Ohio State’s Jaques wins award
DULUTH, Minnesota — Ohio State defender Sophie Jaques won the Patty Kazmaier Award, given to the top player in women’s NCAA DI hockey.
Douglass, Virginia capture titles
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Kate Douglass was involved in two more American records and Virginia dominated once again at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, winning the team title for the third consecutive year.
Douglass lowered her American record in the 200-meter breaststroke and swam a leg on Virginia’s recordsetting 400-yard freestyle relay team.
University to pay $14M in death
A Kentucky university agreed to pay $14 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a wrestler who died of heat stroke after a practice in 2020.
Grant Brace, 20, a wrestler at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, died a few hours after he begged for water during practice, according to a suit filed by his family.
Van der Poel matches grandfather
SAN REMO, Italy — Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel matched his grandfather by winning the Milan-San Remo “monument race.”
Van der Poel, who rides for the Alpecin-Deceuninck team, finished 15 seconds ahead of Filippo Ganna, Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogacar — the two-time Tour de France champion — after nearly 61⁄2 hours of racing.
French cyclist Raymond Poulidor, Van der Poel’s maternal grandfather, won Milan in 1961. He died in 2019.
Haaland nets three as City rolls
LONDON — The goals just keep flowing for Erling Haaland and Manchester City, no matter the competition.
Haaland bagged another hat trick to make it eight goals in his last two games as City eased into the FA Cup semifinals with a 6-0 home win over Championship side Burnely.
That came on the heels of a 7-0 win over Leipzig on Tuesday in the Champions League — when Haaland netted five — showing that City may be hitting another gear.
