Syndicated ‘Justice’: New legal show to launch this fall

- By Michelle Rose

Syndicated ‘Justice’: Earlier this year, it was announced that longtime syndicated staples “Judge Mathis” (now in its 24th season) and “The People’s Court” (currently in its 26th season) would be ending their runs at the end of the season.

The news came as a surprise to many, especially since both shows had garnered several awards, including Daytime Emmy Awards, throughout their runs. Variety was quick to point out that Judge Greg Mathis holds the distinction of being the longestrunning Black male host on television, and the “second-longest-reigning arbitrator in courtroom TV history” (the longest-reigning is “Judge Judy” herself, Judith Sheindlin). And Judge Marilyn Milian, who has presided over “The People’s Court” since taking over from Jerry Sheindlin in 2001, is its longest-reigning host and the first Latina judge to host a nationally syndicated courtroom TV show.

While Milian will soon be bringing down the gavel for the last time in “The People’s Court,” the Georgetown Law School alumna is already working on her next TV project.

Milian has teamed up with Allen Media Group — the media production and distribution company founded by comedian/producer Byron Allen (“Entertainers with Byron Allen”) — and will helm a new court series titled “Justice for the People with Judge Milian.” The one-hour syndicated show is set to launch in fall 2023 and will be available as a daily one-hour strip.

In a statement, Millian said, “I am extremely proud and excited to work with Byron Allen and Allen Media Group to bring ‘Justice for the People with Judge Milian’ to television while helping to enhance legal news coverage for local stations this fall. Byron’s tireless commitment and vision is unwavering and unmatched. I am absolutely certain that working together, we will make the courtroom genre stronger than it’s ever been before.”

This is far from being Allen Media Group’s first foray into the courtroom TV genre. It owns, produces and distributes nine courtroom shows currently in production, including two more that are set to launch this fall: “Equal Justice with Judge Eboni K. Williams” and “Mathis Court with Judge Mathis,” which was announced just days after “Judge Mathis’” cancellation.

“For years I’ve proudly watched Byron Allen build a firstclass global media empire. After 24 years on the air, I can’t think of a better company to work with to create my next great chapter,” Judge Greg Mathis said in a statement.
