Warrensbur­g picks up victory

Warrensbur­g improved to 6-2 overall on the young season with a 56-51 win over Crown Point on Saturday in a Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament boys’ basketball contest at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.

Warrensbur­g held a commanding 12-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter and held off Crown Point to pick up the victory. Evan LaPell finished with 17 points, including six key free throws in the fourth, and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Burghers. Steve Schloss had a team-best 19 points for Warrensbur­g.

Trevor Harris scored 23 to lead Crown Point.

More boys’ basketball:

Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville topped Galway 49-41 in another Coaches vs. Cancer matchup. The game was tied heading into the final quarter before the Wolves outscored the Eagles 15-7 to pull away. Jacob Walrath and Dylan Barnes each scored 13 points for OESJ while Jackson Flint had a game-high 16 for the Eagles.

Girls’ indoor track:

Saratoga Springs dominated the field for a win in meet 2C held at Union College. The Blue Streaks topped the team leaderboar­d with 190.50 points, well ahead of

Guilderlan­d, which finished second with 58 points. Schalmont (51) rounded out the top three. Alycia Hart helped the Saratoga squad build that enormous differenti­al with first-place finishes in the 1,000- and 1,500meter races. Hart won the 1,000 with a time of 3 minutes, 0.3 seconds and the 1,500 in 4:45.2.

Boys’ indoor track: Schenectad­y took first place with 117 points in the boys’ meet at Union. Saratoga placed second (91) and Albany was third (77). Schalmont’s Carter Flowers had a pair of wins in the 1,600 (4:37.3) and the 3,200 (10:15.4).
