Ualbany women’s lacrosse taps area

Shen graduates Marr, Harbinger, Bethlehem’s Rickert strong for Danes

The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team finished 9-9 this season after losing 22-14 to unbeaten Stony Brook (19-0) in the America East Conference championsh­ip game on May 6 in Stony Brook, but the Great Danes got big efforts from three area women.

Freshman Kendra Harbinger of Clifton Park (Shenendeho­wa High) was named the league’s Rookie of the Year and was selected to the Allrookie team. The 5-foot-7 midfielder finished with 56 points on 47 goals and nine assists and led the team in draw controls with 61. She had five goals, an assist and eight ground balls in the loss to Stony Brook.

Sophomore Jordyn Marr of Clifton Park (Shenendeho­wa) and senior Emma Powlin of Penfield were first-team picks. Defender Marr had 26 ground balls, 53 draw controls and 20 caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Kaylee Rickert of Bethlehem (Bethlehem High) was named to the second team. She finished with 25 ground balls, 13 draw controls and 38 caused turnovers. Marr and Rickert were also named to the league’s All-academic team.

Ualbany opened the season 0-7 but won nine of 10, including a 15-10 triumph over Binghamton on May 4 in the league semifinals, before falling to Stony Brook.

Honor for Siena’s Dechiaro

Freshman Isabelle Dechiaro was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-rookie team for her play with Siena softball. Dechiaro, from Cohoes (Cohoes High), started all 44 games, mostly in the outfield and as a designated hitter. She batted .252 (28-for-111) with 10 doubles, eight runs batted in and 19 runs scored. She also led the team and was one of the top players in the MAAC with 25 walks. Junior Madyson Cossack of Agoura Hills, Calif., was named to the first team for the second year in a row for the Saints, who finished 18-26 overall and 13-7 in league play.

First team for Musk

College of Saint Rose junior pitcher Greg Musk was named to the Northeast-10 Conference first team for his performanc­e with the Golden Knights baseball team. The 5-8, 190-pound left-hander from Rotterdam Junction (Schalmont High) was 4-3 with a 2.62 earned run average. He worked a team-high 651/3 innings and gave up 51 hits and 25 runs, 19 earned, with 11 walks and a team-high 54 strikeouts. Francisco Infante of the Bronx was named to the league’s All-rookie team. Saint Rose finished 17-24 overall and 9-15 in league play.

League honor for Silk

Sage senior Alexa Silk earned honorable mention on the Empire 8 Conference All-star softball team, the Gators’ first season in the league. Silk, from Freehold (Greenville Central), hit .412 (33-for-89) from the leadoff spot with two doubles, four triples, 14 runs batted in and 15 runs scored. She also stole 15 bases in 18 tries and finished her career stealing 66 in 71 attempts. At shortstop, Silk had four errors on 63 chances (.937) with two double plays. Sage finished 10-15 overall and 4-10 in league play.

Second good for Vikings’ trio

Three Hudson Valley athletes earned All-america honors at the National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n Division III Outdoor Track Championsh­ip last weekend in Utica. All three finished second — sophomore Alayna Fredenburg and freshmen Elijah Washington and Devin Kipp. The NJCA A presented All-america honors to the top two finishers in each event.

Fredenburg, from Rotterdam (Schalmont High), was runner-up in the women’s javelin throw (111 feet, 6 inches), which was a personal best. She also finished third in the pole vault (7-7). Washington, from Ballston Spa (Ballston Spa High) took second in the men’s hammer throw with a career-best 149-10. He also finished third in the shot put (40-2). Kipp, from Hudson (Hudson High), was second in the men’s shot put (40-3¼).
