Valleycats stumble at Lowell

Tri-city’s early lead is short-lived as team surrenders 11 runs

- Staff report

The Lowell Spinners scored 11 unanswered runs to coast to an 11-3 victory over the visiting Tri-city Valleycats on Friday in a New York-penn League contest at Lelacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.

After a scoreless first two innings, Tri-city jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the third keyed by Carlos Machado’s two-run double.

The ’Cats lead did not last long, however, as the Spinners put four runs on the board in the fourth to go in front. Alberto Schmidt’s two-run blast over the left-field wall put Lowell ahead 4-3 and was the beginning of the Spinners’ 11-run, four-inning offensive outburst that put away the game.

Lowell added a single run in the fifth before another fourrun eruption in the sixth made it 9-3 in favor of the Spinners. Korby Batesole and Tyler Dearden both chipped in with RBI singles and Devlin Granberg stroked a two-run double to left to give Lowell the commanding six-run advantage.

The Spinners closed the scoring in the seventh with two more RBI singles, the first by Jonathan Ortega, followed by another from Batesole to up the score to 11-3.
