Bethlehem remains atop Class A A despite loss
Lots of close games so far among section’s squads
Section II Class A A boys’ soccer has produced thrilling action so far and the last team without a loss ended up being Bethlehem.
The Eagles dropped their first Suburban Council contest Saturday against Ballston Spa.
Bethlehem, ranked No. 2 in the state, owns victories over Shenendehowa (2-1), Albany (2-1) and Niskayuna (1-0).
CLASS AA
■ 1. Bethlehem (7-1, last week No. 1): Derin Gumustop scored with 4:14 remaining in the second overtime Thursday to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 victory at Niskayuna.
■ 2. Albany (5-1, LW No. 3): Mohammed Yehia converted a corner kick from Marcello Fazio just 2:09 into the game Monday as the Falcons posted a 1-0 victory over Shenendehowa.
■ 3. CBA (6-1, LW No. 4): Senior striker Brady Van Epps scored a trio of goals Thursday as the Brothers edged Saratoga 3-2.
■ 4. Niskayuna (4-1-1, LW No. 2): Up next for the Silver Warriors is a road game at CBA on Thursday.
■ 5. Shenendehowa (5-3, LW No. 5): The Plainsmen return to action Thursday against Guilderland.
■ Teams to watch: Guilderland (43-1), Saratoga (4-3), Shaker (6-3-1)
CLASS A
■ 1. Queensbury (8-1, LW No. 1): The state’s top-ranked squad registered its sixth straight shutout against Johnstown and received three goals from Teddy Borgos in an 8-0 win.
■ 2. Averill Park (3-3-2, LW No. 2): Logan Bielawski scored two goals and added an assist, leading the Warriors to a 4-3 overtime victory over Columbia.
■ 3. Ballston Spa (4-4-1, LW No. 3): Liam O’connell scored four minutes into the game Saturday and that score held up as the Scotties stunned Bethlehem 1-0.
■ 4. Burnt Hills (2-6, LW No. 4): Jeff Matthews scored in the final minute Thursday to propel Ballston Spa to a 1-0 win over the Spartans.
■ 5. South Glens Falls (5-4, LW No. 5): Logan Carruthers scored Friday to lead the Bulldogs to a 1-0 Foothills Council victory over Broadalbin-perth.
■ Teams to watch: Albany Academy (4-2), Scotia (4-2)
CLASS B
■ 1. Schalmont (5-1, LW No. 2): Luca Santabarbara scored three times Thursday, helping power the Sabres to an 8-1 decision over Ravena in the Colonial Council.
■ 2. Ichabod Crane (5-1, LW No. 1): The Riders, ranked No. 13 in the state, used a goal from Giovanni Gomez to register a 1-0 nonleague victory against Columbia.
■ 3. Schuylerville (6-2, LW No. 3): The Black Horses entertain Queensbury on Friday night in a huge Foothills Council contest.
■ 4. Voorheesville (5-2, LW No. 4): The Blackbirds had a five-game winning streak snapped Saturday with a 1-0 Colonial Council setback against Albany Academy.
■ 5. Mechanicville (5-1, LW not rated): The Red Raiders, behind two goals from Jeff Luce, collected their fifth straight win Monday with a 3-1 decision over Greenwich.
■ Teams to watch: Cobleskill (4-1), Catskill (6-1), Hudson Falls (4-4), Taconic Hills (6-2), Tamarac (3-2)
CLASS C
■ 1. Lake George (8-0, LW No. 1): Paul Lindsay scored Saturday to provide the Warriors, ranked No. 2 in the state, a 1-0 victory against Mayfield in the title game of the Mayfield Tournament.
■ 2. Mayfield (5-1, LW No. 2): The Panthers bounced back from their loss to Lake George on Spet. 10 by defeating Fonda 4-0 in Western Athletic Conference play.
■ 3. Stillwater (5-2, LW No. 3): The Warriors captured their second straight win Monday with a 3-2 overtime verdict over Tamarac.
■ 4. Maple Hill (4-1, LW No. 5): The Wildcats play host to Catskill on Tuesday in a key Patroon Conference contest.
■ 5. Greenwich (5-3, LW No. 4): The Witches take on Waterford on Wednesday in Wasaren League action.
CLASS D
■ 1. Fort Ann (6-2, LW No. 1): Luke Loso converted a cross from Aidan Barnes on Saturday as the Cardinals recorded a 1-0 nonleague triumph over Glens Falls.
■ 2. OESJ (5-1, LW No. 2): The Wolves rebounded from a loss Friday against Bishop Gibbons by beating Berne-knoxwesterlo 2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play.
■ 3. Hartford (4-1, LW No. 3): Mitchell Breyman scored in overtime Saturday to provide the Tanagers a 2-1 Adirondack League win against Argyle.
■ 4. New Lebanon (5-2, LW No. 4): The Tigers recorded a 1-0 Central Hudson Valley League decision over Loudonville Christian on Monday.
■ 5. Loudonville Christian (23-1, LW No. 5): The Eagles were shut out for the first time this season Monday by New Lebanon.
