Patriots get Browns receiver Gordon
Cleveland deals away problematic player for fifth-round draft choice
The Browns have traded problematic wide receiver Josh Gordon to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round draft pick.
The deal came together Monday, two days after the Browns reached a breaking point with Gordon, who has been suspended for much of his NFL career. Gordon played in Cleveland’s season opener, but reported to the team on Saturday with a hamstring injury after practicing all week.
The Browns have been supportive of Gordon, but the team felt betrayed and decided it was time to cut ties.
Gordon’s tantalizing talent had caused the Browns to hang onto him while he dealt with drug and alcohol dependence. He missed training camp to receive treatment and the Browns were cautiously optimistic he would help them this season.
Bears 24, Seahawks 17: Khalil Mack had one of six sacks against Russell Wilson, Prince Amukamara returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown and Chicago beat Seattle to give coach Matt Nagy his first career victory. Mack, who landed with Chicago after a blockbuster trade with Oakland in September, had a stripsack in the first half and consistently pressured Wilson in another dominant performance. Amukamara jumped the route on a pass intended for Rashaad Penny near midfield for his first career touchdown, making it 24-10 with 6:37 left. It was his first interception since 2015 with the New York Giants. Danny Trevathan then stripped Wilson with his second sack of the game. The Bears’ Leonard Floyd recovered the fumble, and Chicago hung on after blowing a 20-point lead in a season-opening loss to a hobbled Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks (0-2) lost for just the second time in nine Monday night games under coach Pete Carroll. Wilson has been sacked six times in each game this season. With the Bears applying constant pressure and his receivers struggling to get open, the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback completed 22 of 36 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Chicago’s Mitchell Trubisky was 25-for-34 for 200 yards. Bills: Running back Lesean Mccoy has been diagnosed with damage to his rib cartilage, leaving his status uncertain for Buffalo’s game at the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
Browns: Cleveland is working out kickers to replace Zane Gonzalez, who missed four attempts in Sunday’s loss at New Orleans. Gonzalez misfired on two extra points and two field-goal attempts, including a 52-yarder in the final seconds that would have forced overtime. Among the kickers who worked out is Cairo Santos, formerly the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs. Eagles: Carson Wentz has been cleared to return and is slated to start for Philadelphia against Indianapolis in Week 3. Wentz tore his left ACL and LCL on Dec. 10, 2017, in a game against the Los Angeles Rams and had surgery three days later. Backup quarterback Nick Foles led the Eagles to their first NFL title since 1960 and was Super Bowl MVP in the 41-33 victory over New England.
Falcons: Coach Dan Quinn said Monday that he considers running back Devonta Freeman day to day, disputing a report that he will be out for as long as three weeks with a knee injury. Jaguars: Jacksonville will be without left tackle Cam Robinson for the rest of the season because of a knee injury. Titans: Tennessee signed wide receiver Nick Williams and has waived receiver Cameron Batson and tight end Anthony Firkser.
Vikings: Minnesota cut ties with kicker Daniel Carlson on Monday, one day after the rookie fifth-round draft choice went 0-for-3 on field goals against Green Bay. Two of Carlson’s misses came in overtime, forcing the Vikings to settle for a 29-29 draw. The Vikings didn’t immediately add a replacement for Carlson, but coach Mike Zimmer confirmed that free agent Dan Bailey was making his way to Minnesota for a physical exam. That made it all but certain the Vikings will sign Bailey, the second-most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history. The 30-year-old was released by the Dallas Cowboys right before the regular season began in a cost-saving move following his injury influenced regression in 2017. The Vikings also announced the signing of wide receiver Aldrick Robinson, whom Minnesota brought in for a workout on Sept. 7.
