School cheer still vivid after 75 years

- By Wendy Liberatore

Judith Dehart Ogburn isn’t quite sure how many students she graduated with in 1943 at Saratoga Springs High School.

But she remembers the old cheer with ease.

“When the school goes down in history, it’s just another SH victory. So let the cheers ring out for SHS, SHS. Saratoga High.”

The rousing rhyme for school spirit and more were remembered on Saturday when her classmates, the few who remain, reunited for their 75th reunion at the Holiday Inn. There, Dehart Ogburn, along with her old pal Henry Roland, who planned the reunion, talked about “how it was.”

“Being there, seeing people I grew up with and went to high school with, is the reason I’m happy to go,” said the 93-year-old who now lives in New York City.

At the event, she was escorted by her husband of 69 years, Eddie, and her son Craig. Roland’s wife and daughter were there, too.

“People our age need our children to come with us,” she said.

While excited to see old friends, Dehart Ogburn said there were plenty she missed — including the late Charles Dake, aka Dakey, Theresa Wilson and Mabel Mccoy, better known as Mia Mouzon, who died just last year.

“They were some of my favorites,” she said. “There are a few of us around — 75 (years) and counting.”

Considering her mother, Rhoda Kingsland Dehart lived to age 106 and was once hailed by The Saratogian as the oldest woman in the city, it wouldn’t be surprising if Dehart Ogburn attends her 80th reunion.

“I hope so,” she said. “You’ve got to think positive.”
