Masiello top gun for Hoyas field hockey
Senior Helena Masiello is the second-leading scorer on the Georgetown field hockey team.
Masiello, from East Greenbush (Columbia High), has three goals and an assist for the Hoyas, who are 6-1 overall and 0-1 in Big East play after a 5-2 loss to Villanova last Friday. Masiello had a goal in that game and a goal in a 7-0 triumph over LIU Brooklyn. Her top effort came in a 2-0 victory over Appalachian State on April 26 when she had a goal and an assist.
Masiello has played in 63 games with 34 starts and has scored 16 goals with nine assists for 41 points in her career.
Junior back Emily Fraser of Ballston Lake (Shenendehowa High) has played in three games with two starts and has a goal.
Michelle Paulson (Clifton Park)
The senior middle hitter had 16 blocks in two winning matches last weekend to set a new standard in career blocks with Eastern University women’s volleyball. She has 478, including 46 this season. The Shenendehowa High graduate also has 105 kills, 30 digs and 12 service aces for the 9-2 Eagles.
Connor Darmetko (Menands)
The sophomore wide receiver, a Watervliet High graduate, has caught 14 passes for 331 yards (23.64 per reception) with a touchdown for the 2-1 Hartwick football team. Senior linebacker Mark Hackett of Hoosick Falls (Hoosick Falls High) leads the defense with 27 tackles.
Ethan Mcdonald (Guilderland)
The junior was named SUNYAC Runner of the Week on Monday after he led the Oneonta men’s team to victory by finishing first in the Airfield Invitational last Saturday in Oneonta. The Guilderland High graduate covered the 6,000-meter course in 19:01, a 50-second personal record for him over the course.
Julia Paliwodzinski (Ballston Lake)
The sophomore setter, a Shenendehowa High graduate, leads the Arcadia women’s volleyball team with 308 assists and 102 digs. She also has 13 service aces. Junior outside hitter Shannon Ryan of East Greenbush (Columbia High) has 87 kills for the Knights (9-1, 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth Conference).
Morgan Van Epps (Clifton Park)
The senior forward has scored three goals for the 4-1 Bentley field hockey team. That matches the three goals she collected in 17 games as a junior. The Shenendehowa High graduate kicked off the season by scoring two goals, including the game winner, in a 4-1 victory over Adelphi on Sept. 1 in Garden City.
Taylor Hanson (Chatham)
The Elmira sophomore forward was named Empire 8 Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after a big effort the previous week. She had her first career hat trick in a 7-1 victory over Wells on Sept. 12 in Aurora. The Chatham High graduate also had a goal in a 4-0 victory over Cobleskill last Saturday in Elmira.
Lucas Culley (Delmar)
The junior was the top finisher for the Colgate men’s cross country team at the UB Stampede last Saturday in Buffalo. The Bethlehem High graduate covered the 8,000-meter course in 27:22.5 to finish 44th out of 82 runners. He finished 11th at the Raiders’ Harry Lang Invitational on Sept. 1 in Hamilton.
Tyler Gaines (Hoosick Falls)
The defender moved into goal and helped the Morrisville men’s soccer team turn back Keuka 1-0 last Saturday in Morrisville. The Hoosick Falls graduate had seven saves in 93.37 minutes of action and was named North Eastern Athletic Conference Defender of the Week on Monday for his efforts.
