To open its 2018-2019 season, Concerts in the Village presents the Broad Street Orchestra with guest soprano Andrea Bargabos in “Glorious Strings: Light and Darkness in the 19th and 20th Centuries.” Featured will be important works for string orchestra: the Romanian and Transylvanian Dances by Bartok, three songs by Sibelius, Stravinsky’s exhilarating Concerto in D (“Basle”), Shostakovich’s Adagio and Allegretto, and the famous Serenade in E by Dvorak.

Troy Chromatic Concerts presents the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with Nobuyuki Tsujii, piano. One of the world’s foremost chamber orchestras, Orpheus has recorded 71 albums, including the Grammy-winning “Shadow Dances: Stravinsky Miniatures,” and has commissioned and premiered 42 original works. The members of Orpheus rotate musical leadership roles for each work, and the group relies on collaboration and open dialogue in approaching its diverse repertoire. Performing without a conductor, the orchestra presents an annual series at Carnegie Hall and tours extensively.

A fivepiece ensemble with a strong shared background in Irish music. Two members were with Barrule at the 2016 Old Songs Festival. time, maybe back to Louisiana in 1963. The band supports Gaudet’s songwriting and arrangements with just the right amount of gusto and drive. The group consists of Jim Gaudet, guitar, singer, songwriter; Bobby Ristau, upright bass and backing vocals; Sten Isachsen, mandolin and backing vocals; and either special guests Sara Milonovich or Tucker Callander, on fiddle and backing vocals.

Mary Ann Palermo is the lead vocalist of First Take. The music of composer/performer Park Jiha blends classical minimalism and improvised music with traditional Korean instruments like the piri (double-reed bamboo flute), saenghwang (bamboo mouth organ) and yanggeum (hammered dulcimer). Deftly combining the instrumentation and complex expression of traditional Korean music with an array of contemporary forms and sounds, Park Jiha has staked her place in the international music scene over the last few years as a fellow for Red Bull Music Academy, Seoul, and as the official showcase for The World Music Expo, Berlin. Collaborating with musicians from different genres, the project pursues a form of experimental minimalism that rejects ornamentation in favor of a stark clarity and meticulous balance.
