Edwards helps Sabres stay sharp

Two goals against CCHS give him 12 for the season

The Schalmont boys’ soccer team continued to cruise in the Colonial Council behind Ryan Edwards, who scored twice to spark the Sabres to a dominant 4-0 win over Catholic Central on Monday afternoon in Troy.

Edwards scored both of his goals in the second half as Schalmont (8-10, 7-1-0) eventually overcame a solid Crusaders defense. Edwards scored on a long, looping shot over a crowd from an awkward angle less than three minutes into the second half to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead.

He added his 12th goal of the season about 15 minutes later.

Schalmont outshot Catholic Central 23-1 and held a 5-1 edge in corners.

More boys’ soccer: derek dietz had a goal and an assist and noah faganani scored twice and asisisted on two more as Schoharie pulled away in the second half for a 6-2 win over Western Athletic Conference foe Bishop Gibbons. dietz scored an unassisted goal two minutes into the second half to break open a tie game. noah faganani added to the lead on a penalty kick. ethan drinon and Aidan Wellman finished the scoring for the indians. Will Lawson and Joseph matala scored for Bishop Gibbons in the first half.

Girls’ soccer: Scotia and Queensbury played to a 2-2 draw in a foothills Council game in Scotia. tanya Leggiero of Scotia scored midway through the second half on a direct kick from outside the box to tie the game. Both teams had excellent scoring opportunit­ies in overtime of corners, but could not capitalize. Leggiero gave Scotia the early lead, but Cara Parker scored with 12 minutes left in the first half and Brigid duffy added another goal of a follow through with seconds left in the first half. boys’ volleyball: Jake Baker had 14 kills, three blocks, two aces and nine digs as Burnt Hills topped Bethlehem in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-10, in a battle of Suburban Council front-runners. derek Haughey added 25 assists, three kills, two blocks and two aces for the Spartans (8-1, 6-1).

Golf: Aidan fitzgerald aced the ninth hole on the red course at Western turnpike Golf Course in Albany Academy’s 53-stroke win over Guilderlan­d. it was the second career hole-in-one for fitzgerald, who finished with a 39. nick Lyons of Albany Academy took medalist honors with a 37.
