Queensbury, Lake George at head of their class
Spartans tops in state in Class A , Warriors in C
The latest edition of the New York State Sportswriters Association boys’ soccer rankings were released Monday. Two area squads, Queensbury (Class A) and Lake George (Class C), are rated No. 1 in their respective classifications.
Queensbury faces a huge Foothills Council road test Tuesday at Scotia.
CLASS AA
■ 1. Albany (6-1, last week No. 2): The Falcons, now up to No. 13 in the state rankings, return to Suburban Council play Tuesday at Colonie.
■ 2. CBA (8-1, LW No. 3): Jack Mendrysa registered four goals Saturday to help power the Brothers past Columbia 10-1.
■ 3. Bethlehem (8-2, LW No. 1): The Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday with a 4-0 win over Schenectady and next entertain Columbia Tuesday.
■ 4. Shenendehowa (6-3, LW No. 5): Ethan Brunell scored twice and Eric Makhatadze and Reggie Durden each contributed one goal and one assist in a 5-1 decision over Guilderland.
■ 5. Saratoga (6-3, LW not rated): Evan Farr and Jack Donnelly each posted one goal and one assist Sat-
urday, leading the Blue Streaks to a 5-0 victory against Averill Park. ■ Teams to watch: Guilderland (6-4-1), Niskayuna (5-2-1), Shaker (6-3-1)
CLASS A
■ 1. Queensbury (10-1, LW No. 1): The state’s top-ranked squad registered its sixth straight shutout against Johnstown and received three goals from Teddy Borgos in an 8-0 win.
■ 2. Averill Park (4-4-2, LW No. 2): The Warriors face a challenging week with a road game at Niskayuna and a home contest vs. Albany.
■ 3. Ballston Spa (4-6-1, LW No. 3): This is a road week for the Scotties with games at Shaker (Tuesday) and Columbia (Thursday).
■ 4. Scotia (7-2, LW NR): Aidan Nichter tallied a pair of goals as the Tartans blanked Amsterdam 3-0. ■ 5. Burnt Hills (3-7, LW No. 4): Max Nemec scored in the second overtime Saturday, lifting the Spartans to a 2-1 win over Colonie.
■ Teams to watch: Albany Academy (5-2), South Glens Falls (6-5)
CLASS B
■ 1. Schalmont (8-1, LW No. 1): Sophomore standout Ryan Edwards scored two goals and added an assist Monday to lead the Sabres to a 4-0 Colonial Council victory against Catholic Central.
■ 2. Ichabod Crane (8-1, LW No. 2): The Riders, now ranked No. 15 in the state, held on to record a 3-2 verdict over Voorheesville on Monday night.
■ 3. Schuylerville (7-3, LW No. 3): The Black Horses look to bounce back from a 2-1 setback against Queensbury on Tuesday when they play at Johnstown.
■ 4. Mechanicville (8-1, LW No. 5): The Red Raiders play host to Greenwich on Tuesday night on their new turf field in Wasaren League play.
■ 5. Voorheesville (5-4, LW No. 4): The Blackbirds look to shake off back-to-back one-goal losses to Schalmont (2-1) and Ichabod Crane (3-2) Wednesday when they host Lansingburgh.
■ Teams to watch: Cobleskill (5-3), Hudson Falls (6-4)
CLASS C
■ 1. Lake George (11-0, LW No. 1): The state’s top-ranked squad posted a 3-0 Adirondack League win Monday over Bolton-warrensburg — giving the Warriors a 57-0 goal edge during league play.
■ 2. Maple Hill (7-1, LW No. 4): The Wildcats defeated Coxsackieathens 2-0 Monday in Patroon Conference play, lifting coach Dan Gillespie’s career win total to 658 (No. 1 all-time in state history).
■ 3. Mayfield (6-1, LW No. 2): Up next for the Panthers, ranked No. 18 in the state, is a Western Athletic Conference contest Wednesday at Canajoharie.
■ 4. Stillwater (8-2, LW No. 3): Grant Baker scored three times Friday, helping the Warriors collect a 6-0 decision over Hoosic Valley.
■ 5. Bolton-warrensburg (62-1, LW NR): The second-place
team in the Adirondack League West Division dropped a 3-0 contest Monday against Lake George.
CLASS D
■ 1. Fort Ann (8-2, LW No. 1): Luke Loso converted a cross from Aidan Barnes on Saturday as the Cardinals recorded a 1-0 nonleague triumph over Glens Falls.
■ 2. OESJ (8-1, LW No. 2): Ranked No. 13 in the state, the Wolves collected their five straight Western Athletic Conference win Monday with a 4-0 triumph over Canajoharie.
■ 3. Hartford (8-1, LW No. 3): The Tanagers posted their fifth consecutive win in Adirondack League action Monday with a 5-1 victory over Argyle.
■ 4. Bishop Maginn (5-0, LW NR): The Golden Griffins take on Germantown on Tuesday in Central Hudson Valley League play.
■ 5. New Lebanon (5-3, LW No. 4): The Tigers host Bishop Maginn on Thursday in a CHVL night game.
