Burchhardt’s huge night lifts St. Rose

2 goals, 2 assists include scoring late game-winner

Morgan Burchhardt had the biggest game of her career to lead the Saint Rose women’s soccer team to a key 4-3 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Assumption last Tuesday in Worcester, Mass.

The 5-foot-6 senior midfielder from Burnt Hills (Burnt Hillsballs­ton Lake High) assisted on the first two goals, tied the game with a goal in the second half and then won it when she knocked in a loose ball from 15 yards out with less than five minutes left in the game.

Burchhardt has four goals and three assists on the season and the two goals she scored against Assumption are the 24th and 25th of her career. She had big freshman and sophomore years for the Golden Knights but saw just limited action due to injuries both in 2016 and 2017.

Two other area players see action on the squad. Senior Sophia Constantin­e of Niskayuna (Niskayuna High) has played in seven games with two starts on defense and sophomore Myah Hughes of Scotia (Scotia-glenville High) has also played in seven games with two starts and has scored a goal.

St. Rose is 5-2-1 overall and 3-2-0 in NE-10 play after a 2-1 overtime league victory over Merrimack on Saturday in Albany. The Golden Knights travel to Syracuse for a league match with Le Moyne on Wednesday.

Big honor for Bornt

Hudson Valley sophomore Jacqueline Bornt was named National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n Division III Player of the Week (Sept. 10-16) in women’s tennis it was announced on Friday. Bornt, from Wynantskil­l (Averill Park High), posted a 4-0 record in No. 1 singles and a 3-1 mark in No. 1 doubles with freshman Miranda Morrison of Colonie (Colonie High). The Vikings are 2-2-1 after a 4-3 victory over Mohawk Valley CC on Saturday in Utica. On the season, Bornt is 5-0 in singles and Bornt and Morrison are 4-1 in doubles.

A goal for Gardner

Freshman Chris Gardner of Hudson (Hudson High) scored his first collegiate goal to help the Cobleskill men’s soccer team even its North Eastern Athletic Conference record at 1-1 with a 6-0 victory on Sunday at Cazenovia. The 3-6 Fighting Tigers’ starting lineup also includes sophomore Jacob Bunker of Broadalbin (Broadalbin-perth), freshman Justin Matthews of Galway (Galway Central) and freshman Lucas Jetty of Northville (Northville Central). Jetty has a goal and three assists. Senior Patrick Mcgovern of Congleton, England and junior Mame Amar of Manhattan lead the team with six goals each.

Big start for Geisel

Junior Julia Geisel of Clifton Park (Shenendeho­wa High) is 4-1 at No. 4 singles and 7-0 with Rebecca Jackson of Saugerties at No. 2 doubles for the Sage women’s tennis team. The Gators are 4-3 overall and 2-3 in Empire 8 Conference play after dropping an 8-1 league match to St. John Fisher on Saturday in Albany. Junior Abby Clobridge of West Sand Lake (Averill Park High) is 2-5 at No. 1 singles and has teamed with junior Sadie Dunne of Clifton Park (Shenendeho­wa High) to go 4-3 in No. 1 doubles. Dunne is 3-4 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Molly Cochran of Ravena (Ravena-coeymansse­lkirk) is 2-5 playing both No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Duo helping Union volleyball

Seniors Emma Sprotberry and Alaina Thaxter are seeing action for the Union women’s volleyball team which is 9-5 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play after beating Bard 3-0 on Friday in Annandaleo­n-hudson and dropping a 3-1 decision to Vassar on Saturday in Schenectad­y. Outside hitter Sprotberry, from Burnt Hills (Burnt Hills-ballston Lake), has 61 digs and eight service aces. Middle blocker Thaxter, from Cobleskill (Cobleskill-richmondvi­lle), has 22 kills, seven digs and six total blocks. Sophomore Gillian Gore of the Bronx is the team’s top player with 197 digs, 182 kills and 19 service aces. Sophomore Sage Shimamoto of Hillsborou­gh, Calif. has a team-high 400 assists.
