WYNANTSKIL­L —Nancy J. Burt Hannigan, 80, of Church Street died Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by her family after a long courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late John Alden Burt and Elsie Ida Burt and wife of James G. Hannigan Sr. for more than 60 years. She had resided in Wynantskil­l all her life and was a 1955 graduate of Troy High School.

Nancy’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted and proud stay at home mother and grandmothe­r. She treated everyone as though they were “The Favorite”. She loved to go to her children’s and grandchild­ren’s events, never missing an activity. Nancy was an avid bingo player, enjoyed camping, bowling, fishing and traveling. For many years she and Jim visited friends in Bermuda, which were made while vacationin­g there. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Everyone was welcome and you always left physically and emotionall­y full. Going out to breakfast with her family and friends

was the highlight of her day. For the last 25 years she wintered in Florida. Her favorite aspect of Florida was the cherished friendship­s she made. Nancy was the keeper of the cookie jar for her children, grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren. (THE JAR WAS NEVER EMPTY.)

She was the former conference hotel coordinato­r for the New York State Associatio­n of Fire Chiefs. Through her travel with her husband, she made many friends from across the United States and Canada, with whom she maintained constant contact. She was an election poll official for the Town of North Greenbush for numerous years.

She was a communican­t of St. Jude the Apostle Church and a member of the Rosary Altar Society in Wynantskil­l, a life member and past president of the Wynantskil­l Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and a volunteer dispatcher for the North Greenbush Ambulance and Wynantskil­l Fire Company. Nancy will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband and her children, Colleen (Daniel) Bornhorst, James G. (Debra) Hannigan Jr., Maureen Hannigan, Kathleen (John) Middleton, Janice (Sean) Kerwin, Kimberly Hannigan and Patrick Hannigan; a son-in-law, Steven Brochu; two brothers, Elmer Burt and James Burt; 21 grandchild­ren; seven great-grandchild­ren and several nieces and nephews. She was predecease­d by her daughter, Joann M. Brochu and her sister, Myrtle V. Miller.

Relatives and friends may call at the St. Jude the Apostle Church, 43 Brookside Avenue, Wynantskil­l on Thursday, September 27, from 4-7 p.m.

Funeral service will be held Friday, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated by Rev. Anthony Ligato, Pastor and the Rev. John Varno, former Pastor.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery Wynantskil­l.

The family would like to thank the staff of Samaritan Hospital for their care of Nancy over the years.
