Of­fender gets prison for child sex abuse

GLOVERSVILLE — A reg­is­tered sex of­fender was sen­tenced to 15 years in prison for sex­u­ally abus­ing an 8-year-old child he was babysit­ting.

Robert J. Velett, 44, of Gloversville was sen­tenced Fri­day for forc­ing the child to have sex­ual con­tact on Aug. 16 while Velett was babysit­ting, ac­cord­ing to the Ful­ton County Dis­trict At­tor­ney’s Of­fice.

Velett had al­ready been reg­is­tered as a sex of­fender and was sen­tenced as a sec­ond child sex­ual as­sault felony of­fender.

Upon re­lease from prison, Velett faces 20 years of post-re­lease su­per­vi­sion and must regis­ter as a sex of­fender. As he ap­proaches his re­lease date, Velett will be eval­u­ated for “civil con­fine­ment,” of­fi­cials said.
