Police investigate after a 22-yearold man was shot in the head while in his car, another incident in Albany’s violent year.

A 22-year-old man was in critical condition Friday after being shot in the head while he in a parked car just blocks from the governor’s mansion, police said.

The man is the 51st person injured or killed by a shooting in the city in a year, between Nov. 2017 and Nov. 2018, based on Albany police statistics by Albany police.

The man was wounded when someone opened fire on the car at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday near Park Avenue and Philip Street, an intersection in the Mansion District within blocks of the Executive Mansion. It is also less than a block away from Bishop Maginn High School. No arrests have been made. Police spokesman Steve Smith said the victim was in a car when shot at least once. He suffered serious injuries and was being treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

“Right now, we’re just trying to put the pieces together and continue our investigation,” Smith said.

In 2018 there have been 39 people injured or killed by shootings in Albany. In 2017 there were 45 and in 2016 there were 32 people.
