Golden Knights rally for vic­tory in their opener

The Col­lege of Saint Rose women’s bas­ket­ball team held off a late Dae­men rally to pick up a 69-66 vic­tory on Fri­day in its sea­son opener in the Roberts Wes­leyan Tour­na­ment at Voller Ath­letic Cen­ter in Rochester.

The Golden Knights coasted out to a 39-30 half­time ad­van­tage but found them­selves down by two points, 66-64, with just two min­utes, 22 sec­onds left in the fourth quar­ter. Se­nior Ash­ley Van­der­wall, how­ever, con­nected on a 3-point bas­ket with only 50 sec­onds re­main­ing to give Saint Rose the lead for good, and fol­low­ing a pair of Court­ney Clasen free throws the Golden Knights had the 69-66 win.

Van­der­wall fin­ished with a game-high 22 points while Clasen posted 18 points for Saint Rose. Isa Vara de Rey added 10 points and five re­bounds for the Golden Knights.

Tiara Fil­bert scored 19 points and pulled down seven re­bounds for Dae­men, which was also play­ing its first game.

Saint Rose re­turns to ac­tion at 4 p.m. Satur­day to take on host Roberts Wes­leyan back at Voller Ath­letic Cen­ter in Rochester.
