Horses run loose on Malta streets
Where well- groomed horses came from is still a mystery
State Police and Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies found themselves wrangling a trio of rogue horses on Thursday afternoon.
Malta Supervisor Darren O’connor said the horses busted out of a Raymond Road stable and took to the street running along East High and Route 9.
“Some of the people who saw it said it looked like a steeple chase,” O’connor said. “Thank goodness, no one was hurt.”
Trooper Kerra Burns said a local horse owner, Burt Schwab of Cross Timbers Ranch in Middle Grove, assisted the troopers in luring the horses onto a trailer.
Schwab said he got a call from a friend who saw the troopers trying to pen the horses with their cars as the horses headed north on Route 9.
“They were coming in my direction,” said Schwab who is also a mechanic at Union Coachworks. “The police finally had them corralled and I went in with a halter and lead I had in my truck and got them in the trailer. It was quite the adventure.”
Schwab said others helped too, including a jogger, who also had a rope. He said the horses looked well-cared for, but were tired and sweaty.
“That’s normal for a horse running around like that,” Schwab said. “I bet someone came home and was missing them.”
After the horses were on the trailer, the police had the task of finding their owners. A trip down Raymond Road on Friday found no one home at few small horse barns and a precise location could not be confirmed.
“The police were frustrated because they didn’t know where the horses came from,” she said.
To make it from Raymond Road to High Street and Route 9, the horses had to cross a bridge over the Northway.
Where they were headed or what spooked them to leave their pasture remains a mystery.
