RPI edges St. Lawrence and Union falls to Clarkson on North Country trip’s first night.

Patrick Polino scored two goals and Jacob Hayhurst had two assists as RPI has its first winning streak in two months by beating St. Lawrence 6-5 Friday night at Appleton Arena in Canton.

The Engineers (6-14, 4-6 ECAC) won consecutiv­e games for the first time since late October. It was also RPI’S first win in Canton since 2015. St. Lawrence has lost four straight.

RPI never trailed, but couldn’t quite shake the last-place Saints (3-15-1, 1-5-1).

T.J. Samec scored 1:51 into the game to give RPI the early lead. Zach Risteau pulled St. Lawrence even 37 seconds later, but Kyle Hallbauer put RPI back up on a wrister from the point. The Engineers outshot St. Lawrence 14-7 in the opening period.

Freshman goaltender Emil Zetterquis­t started between the pipes for the Saints, but was replaced by Arthur Brey after the first period.

The teams combined for five goals on 27 shots in the second period.

Patrick Polino put RPI up 3-1 24 seconds into the period, but Jake Stevens and Michael Ederer scored for St. Lawrence to tie it. Ederer tallied on the power play.

Polino’s second goal of the period at 13:18 gave RPI the lead again. Brady Wiffen added a goal with 1:03 left in the period.

Eddie Pavlini scored 7:47 into the third period to cut RPI’S lead to 5-4, but Jake Marrello restored the two-goal margin 11 seconds later.

Andrew Mcintyre scored with nine minutes left, but St. Lawrence couldn’t add the equalizer.

Hayhurst leads the team in scoring with 19 points.

St. Lawrence is 96-52-11 all-time versus RPI. It is the most victories any team has against RPI. The rivalry dates back to 1925.
