17-0 Michigan better than ever

Win over Northweste­rn gives men’s basketball team school’s best start

Jon Teske scored all 17 of his points in the first half, and No. 2 Michigan is now off to its best start in program history after an 80-60 victory over Northweste­rn on Sunday night.

The Wolverines (17-0, 6-0 Big Ten) had started 16-0 on two previous occasions.

Zavier Simpson’s career-high 24 points led Michigan.

Northweste­rn (10-7, 1-5) was without leading scorer Vic Law, who was out with a lower-body injury. Dererk Pardon scored 20 points for the Wildcats. Michigan state 71, Penn state 56: Nick Ward had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 6 Michigan State past Penn State. The Spartans (15-2, 6-0 Big Ten) have won 10 straight. They also beat the Nittany Lions (7-10, 0-6) for the 10th consecutiv­e time. Lamar Stevens led Penn State with 20 points. added 19 and No. 6 Stanford (14-1, 4-0 Pac-12) rolled past Arizona (13-3, 3-2). n.c. state 66, Virginia 38: Erika Cassell had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 8 North Carolina State (17-0, 4-0 ACC) remained the only unbeaten Division I women’s team with a victory over Virginia (7-10, 1-3).

Oregon state 76, southern California 52: Mikayla Pivec scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half and No. 10 Oregon State (13-2, 4-0 Pac 12) routed USC (10-6, 0-5). syracuse 90, north Carolina 77: Junior guard Tiana Mangakahia scored 34 points and had 10 rebounds and 10 assists for her first triple-double and No. 11 Syracuse (14-2, 3-0 ACC) defeated North Carolina (9-8, 0-3).

Georgia 66, Tennessee 62: Caliya Robinson had 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two of her six blocks in a critical last-minute possession and Georgia (12-5, 3-1 Southeaste­rn Conference) defeated No. 13 Tennessee, giving the Lady Vols (12-4, 1-3) a three-game losing streak for the first time in 33 years. Marquette 72, Georgetown 62: Natisha Hiedeman scored 20 points with 10 rebounds and No. 15 Marquette (14-3, 4-0 Big East) held off Georgetown (8-9, 2-4).

Mississipp­i 65, Kentucky 49: Crystal Allen scored 16 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter and Mississipp­i (7-11, 1-3 SEC) upset No. 16 Kentucky (15-3, 2-2), which was 11-0 at home. Kentucky was without top scorer Maci Morris, a last-minute scratch due to illness. arizona state 62, California 61: Kianna Ibis made 4 of 4 from 3-point range and finished with 26 points and Reili Richardson hit 1 of 2 free throws with five seconds left to help No. 19 Arizona State (12-4, 3-2 Pac-12) beat California (10-5, 1-3). south Carolina 76, lsu 53: Te’a Cooper scored 14 points, Alexis Jennings had 10 points and seven rebounds and No. 21 South Carolina (12-4, 4-0 SEC) beat LSU (11-5, 2-2) for its eighth straight victory.

Clemson 57, Florida state 45: Kobi Thornton scored 19 points with 10 rebounds and Clemson ended an 18-game losing streak against No. 22 Florida State. The Tigers (12-5, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won three straight, had not won in Tallahasse­e in 17 years. Clemson held the Seminoles (14-2, 2-1), who had won 10 straight, to a season-low 26.6 percent shooting to go with a season-high 23 turnovers. indiana 75, Wisconsin 68: Jaelynn Penn scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half, Ali Patberg had 15 points, six rebounds and nine assists and No. 25 Indiana (15-2, 4-1 Big Ten) beat Wisconsin (10-7, 1-4). Indiana had lost 55-50 to Ohio State on Thursday.
