Troy man charged in death of a 21-year-old mother in the Collar City.

A city man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the slaying of Brianna Haughton, a 21-year-old mother killed inside a Pawling Avenue residence last month, police said.

Rashad Edwards, 34, was arrested on an indictment warrant on as-yet undisclosed charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Rensselaer County Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Haughton was found dead at the 491 Pawling Ave. home, which is also given as Edwards’ address, about 5:30 p.m.

Jan. 13.

Police arrived at the home after someone called to ask officers to check on her son’s welfare. They found Haughton’s body at the home and found the infant safe in another location.

Troy Police Chief Brian Owens called the incident an “extreme act of violence” but has since released few details about

the homicide.

The department’s detectives, State Police, FBI and the state’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision worked together on the investigation.

Edwards is currently in the county jail. Police said a formal reading of the charges he faces will occur at the arraignment.

Haughton was described in her obituary as a “beautiful, caring and loving young

lady that had a heart of gold and was always there for anyone that needed her help.”

She was a Maple Hill High School graduate who enjoyed the outdoors, specifically playing basketball, having campfires and splitting wood. But above all else she enjoyed spending time with her family — especially her young son, Justice.

“As we announce this arrest today, we are thinking of Brianna, her young child and the family and friends that she left behind,” Troy Police Department said in Tuesday’s news release.
