1919: Pauline Lee, the Africanamerican wife of Charlie Lee, a Madison Avenue Chinese launderer, was shot three times at close range by a barging-in Lucille Howard in the Bleecker Street residence where Lee was said to have been entertaining a man with whom Howard was also allegedly having an affair. Howard was arrested and held without bail and Lee was transported to the Albany Homeopathic Hospital. Following Lee’s death, authorities planned to charge Howard with manslaughter.
1969: About 1,300 Capital Region high school seniors were among 18,843 winners of Regents Scholarships, announced the State Education Department. Six hundred had won Regents Scholarships for nursing education, each of whom would be entitled to an annual award of $200 to $500 depending on family income, for each year of study in a registered nursing course. The State Education Department also announced local winners of special scholarships for children of deceased or disabled members of the Armed Forces. 1994: A gas explosion that injured two Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. workers last week in Queensbury was being blamed on possible static electricity. Nimo workers were attempting to fix a gas leak on Quaker Road near Grossman’s Lumber, Queensbury Fire Chief Brian Laflure said, when the gas ignited. A fireball burst into the air, shooting flames as high as 60 feet. It took workers two hours to bring the flames down because they had to dig through snow, ice and ground to shut off the main. The workers were treated for minor burns.
