Stefanelli a repeat dive champ

Albany Academy grad tops America East in 3-meter

Junior Allison Stefanelli defended her 3-meter dive title and finished third in the 1-meter dive to help the New Hampshire women’s swim team finish second to Maryland-baltimore County at the America East Conference Championsh­ips last weekend in Worcester, Mass.

Stefanelli, from Loudonvill­e and an Albany Academy for Girls graduate, scored a 255.30 to take the 3-meter and came back to post a score of 233.25 in the 1-meter.

The Wildcats got a strong performanc­e from sophomore Miranda Bacon of Scotia (Scotia-glenville High), who finished second in the 100 breaststro­ke (1 minute, 3.48 seconds), fourth in the 200 breaststro­ke (2:19.27) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:05.53). She was a member of the 400 medley relay which finished first (3:44.04).

Malick Diomande (Delmar)

The junior posted a first-place finish in the high jump for the Cornell men’s indoor track team at the Fastrack National Invitation­al Feb. 8 at Ocean Beach Athletic Complex in Staten Island. The Bethlehem High graduate had a college career-best jump of 6 feet, 10¼ inches to best a field of 29. His effort earned him a spot in the IC4A Championsh­ip March 2-3 in Boston, Mass., and a fourth seed at the Ivy League Indoor Track Championsh­ip this weekend, also in Boston.

Nora Klinowski (Albany)

The Niagara junior finished second out of 30 entrants in the mile at the RIT Late February Invitation­al last Saturday in Rochester. Her time was a personal best of 5:14.18. On Jan. 25-26, the Shaker High graduate finished fourth in the 3,000 with a personal-best time of 10:38.18. Niagara junior Julia Freemire of Schuylervi­lle (Schuylervi­lle High) finished sixth in the 5,000 at RIT in 20.10.90.

Joe Cremo (Scotia)

The graduate student, a former standout at the University at Albany, has been seeing action off the bench for the Villanova men’s basketball team. The Wildcats are 20-6 overall and 11-2 in the Big East Conference after a 75-61 loss to St. John’s last Sunday in New York City. Cremo, a Scotia-glenville High graduate, had a team-high 14 points in the game. He’s played in all 26 games with five starts and is seeing 19.3 minutes of action per game. He’s averaging 5.2 points and has connected on 32 of 81 3-point attempts (39.5 percent).

Carly Johnson (Greenville)

The senior guard was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week on Monday after a standout game for the Hartwick women’s basketball team as the first-place Hawks topped second-place Stevens last Saturday in Hoboken, N.J. The Greenville Central graduate had 24 points, aided by 4-for-6 accuracy from 3-point range. The 3-pointers helped her become the Hawks’ all-time career leader with 167. She’s averaging 14.7 points per game for Hartwick, which is 21-4 overall and 14-2 in league play.

Lexi Sciortino (Schenectad­y)

The sophomore posted a career-best time of 5:10.85 to finish fifth out of 44 runners in the mile for the La Salle women’s indoor track team at the Fastrack National Invite on Feb. 8 at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island. The Niskayuna High graduate had a college career-best time in the 3,000 of 10:39.54 when she finished seventh at the Brian Horwitz Invitation­al on Jan. 11 in New York City.

Drew Burns (Guilderlan­d)

The senior co-captain finished third in the 800 for the Marist men’s indoor track team at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championsh­ip last weekend at The Armory in New York City. His time was 1:54.91. He also ran a leg on the 3,200 relay, which finished fourth in 7:49.12. The Guilderlan­d High graduate’s top time in the 800 is 152.43, which helped him finish 23rd out of 273 runners at the David Hemery Valentine Invitation­al on Feb. 8 in Boston, Mass.
