Berkshire Bank to close 3 local branches
Locations in Wilton, Colonie and Glenville on list to be eliminated
Berkshire Bank is closing three Capital Region branches, as well as one outside of Utica.
The Boston-based bank, which has 18 branches locally and a regional headquarters in Pittsfield, Mass., notified state banking regulators it planned to close its branch on Route 50 in Wilton as well as its branch on Vly Road in Colonie and its branch on Saratoga Road in Glenville.
Berkshire Bank spokeswoman Heidi Higgins said Wednesday that the bank “is committed to maintaining a strong presence in New York” despite the three branch closures locally. She said that the branches are being shut in response to local customer trends.
A fourth Berkshire Bank branch that is closing is in the town of Marcy outside of Utica.
“As we grow, we continue to look for opportunities to
enhance our existing branch network and promote efficiency, while still providing the convenience that your everyday banking needs deserve,” Higgins said. “The proximity of other branch locations was a factor to close these four locations and the changing consumer preferences and improvements in financial technology have further spurred the reduction in branches.”
Berkshire Bank has 115 branches total in New England, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and $12.2 billion in assets.
Berkshire Bank has a 2.21 percent market share in the Capital Region’s core four counties, according to the FDIC, with $651 million in local deposits. ▶ lrulison@timesunion.com 518-454-5504 @larryrulison
