Spartans defeat Wolverines

Michigan State knocks off in-state rival on road, takes command in Big Ten

Cassius Winston had 27 points and eight assists, and 10th-ranked Michigan State moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten with a 77-70 victory over No. 7 Michigan on Sunday.

Kenny Goins had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Xavier Tillman added 14 points for the Spartans, who snapped Michigan’s 22-game winning streak at Crisler Center despite being without two of their top three scorers.

Joshua Langford is out for the season, and Nick Ward is recovering from a broken hand, but Goins and Tillman produced in Ward’s absence for Michigan State.

Michigan (24-4, 13-4) led by six early in the second half, but that advantage was short-lived. Down 51-45, the Spartans (23-5, 14-3) outscored Michigan 21-7 to take control. The Wolverines shot 2 for 14 from 3-point range in the second half.

Zavier Simpson scored 19 points to lead Michigan.

Xavier 66, Villanova 54: Naji Marshall scored 17 points and Xavier used a big surge in the second half to rally past Villanova, leaving the Wildcats with three straight losses in Big East play for the first time since the conference was reconfigur­ed. The Musketeers (15-13, 7-8) won their fourth straight — matching their season high. Villanova (20-8, 11-4) had won five in a row against the Musketeers. Phil Booth had 12 points in the first half, when the Wildcats led by as many as nine points. Booth made only one of his eight shots in the second half and finished with 14 points. Former Ualbany standout Joe Cremo hit a 2-point basket and missed his three 3-point attempts in scoring two points for Villanova. He had two rebounds and two assists.

Women

Oregon 96, Southern Cal 78: Sabrina Ionescu recorded her Ncaa-record 17th triple-double, Erin Boley had a career-high 32 points and No. 2 Oregon snapped a twogame losing streak by racing past Southern California. Ionescu finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists to lead the Ducks (25-3, 14-2 Pac-12). It also was her seventh triple-double of the season, another NCAA record. Mariya Moore had 30 points to lead the Trojans (15-12, 5-11).

Uconn 68, Tulsa 49: Megan Walker scored 21 points and No. 3 Uconn, playing without Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma, rolled past Tulsa. With associate head coach Chris Dailey filling in for Auriemma, who is ill, Uconn remained undefeated in six seasons in the American Athletic Conference. It was the first time that Auriemma, in his 34th season as the Huskies coach, had missed a game since the 1997 Big East Tournament. Morgan Brady paced Tulsa (1115, 5-8) with 17 points.

Louisville 87, Boston College 51: Asia Durr scored 23 points to lead No. 4 Louisville (25-2, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) past Boston College (14-14, 3-12). Mississipp­i State 86, Vanderbilt 70: Teaira Mccowan scored 23 points, Anriel Howard and Andra Espinoza-hunter both added 20, and No. 6 Mississipp­i State (25-2, 13-1 Southeaste­rn Conference) beat Vanderbilt (6-20, 1-13).

Stanford 71, Arizona State 50: Senior Alanna Smith went out with 14 points in her final regular-season home game, Kiana Williams scored 15 points, and No. 7 Stanford (23-4, 13-3 Pac-12) pulled away in the second half to beat No. 17 Arizona State (18-8, 9-6).

N.C. State 74, North Carolina 69: Kiara Leslie scored 21 points and made the go-ahead jumper with 37.7 seconds remaining to help No. 9 North Carolina State (243, 11-3 ACC) beat its rival (17-12, 8-7). Marquette 79, Xavier 53: Natisha Hiedeman and Allazia Blockton had doubledoub­les as No. 11 Marquette (23-5, 14-2) rolled to clinch a share of the Big East Conference title. A’riana Gray had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Musketeers (1116, 2-14). Oregon State 75, UCLA 72: Aleah Goodman scored 11 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter and No. 12 Oregon State (235, 13-3 Pac-12) turned back UCLA (17-11, 10-6).

South Carolina 82, Tennessee 67: Bianca Cuevas-moore scored a career-high 28 points as No. 13 South Carolina (20-7, 12-2 SEC) never trailed Tennessee (17-10, 6-8).

Miami 64, Florida State 54: Mykea Gray had eight of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, including a clutch jumper with 11⁄2 minutes left followed by a big steal, and No. 14 Miami (23-6, 11-3 ACC) beat No. 22 Florida State (21-6, 9-5).

Kentucky 57, LSU 52: Taylor Murray scored 18 points and No. 16 Kentucky (235, 10-4 SEC) held on for its sixth straight win. Ayana Mitchell had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers (16-10, 7-7).

South Dakota State 82, South Dakota 78 (OT): Macy Miller scored 28 points and Tagyn Larson had 21 points and 11 rebounds to help South Dakota State take command of the Summit League race. SDSU (22-6, 14-1) extended its win streak to 12 while ending No. 23 South Dakota’s (24-4, 12-2) at 11.

Drake 96, Indiana State 77: Becca Hittner scored 33 points and No. 24 Drake (21-5, 13-1 Missouri Valley Conference) rolled past Indiana State (11-15, 5-10).
