QB Griffin to back up Jackson with Ravens

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Robert Griffin III has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, where the 29-yearold quarterbac­k will play behind Lamar Jackson.

Griffin returned to the NFL with the Ravens last season following a oneyear hiatus. Serving as the backup to Joe Flacco and Jackson, Griffin was inactive for the first nine weeks and ended up seeing limited action in three games. Baltimore traded Flacco to Denver earlier this month. More NFL: Linebacker clay Matthews has agreed to a two-year contract with the Rams after a decade with the Green Bay Packers. The 32-year-old Matthews set the Packers franchise record with 831⁄2 sacks over his 10 seasons in Green Bay. The former USC star earned six Pro Bowl selections and won a Super Bowl ring with the Packers, although his 31⁄2 sacks last season were a career low . ... The Lions signed tight end Logan Thomas. Drafted as a quarterbac­k by the Cardinals in 2014, he had spent the past two seasons with the Bills.

Figure skating: Defending champion Nathan chen upstaged two-time Olympic champion yuzuru hanyu to lead the short program at the figure skating world championsh­ips in Saitama, Japan. Chen has 107.40 points. U.S. teammate Jason Brown is second with 96.81. Tennis: Three-time tournament champion Venus Williams won her opening match at the Miami Open by beating dalila Jakupovic 7-5, 6-3. Williams won the tournament in 1998, 1999 and 2001 when it was played on Key Biscayne. The event moved this year to the Miami Dolphins’ complex in Miami Gardens, Fla., and Williams played in the stadium. whitney osuigwe ,a 16-year-old qualifier from Bradenton, Fla,, earned her first WTA Tour victory by beating Mari osaka, 6-2, 6-4. Osaka is the sister of 2018 champion Naomi osaka. No. 3-seeded Petra kvitova won her opening match by beating Maria sakkari 6-1, 6-4.

College hockey: RPI goalie Lovisa selander was named a firstteam All-american by the American Hockey Coaches Associatio­n.
