Cats rescued from abandoned building
Man attempted to care for animals in Albany dwelling
Local authorities rescued numerous cats, including a litter of kittens, from an abandoned building this week.
The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and Albany County District Attorney posted photos of the cats, some just young kittens, on social media on Tuesday. The cats were photographed inside 21 Judson St., where trash was strewn about and the walls deteriorating.
“Yesterday we were alerted to an abandoned house in Albany in which there was an unknown number of cats,” the MHHS said on its Facebook page Tuesday.
A man was found living inside the building, which had been abandoned for quite some time, Officer Steve Smith, a spokesman for the Albany Police Department, said. The man was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation. No charges were filed against him.
MHHS rescued a litter of five kittens Monday, trapped six more adult cats on Tuesday and captured the mother cat on Wednesday.
“The cats are extremely scared and shy, but seem in good health,” said MHHS President Todd Cramer.
“We don’t often get called to abandoned buildings to gather cats,” Cramer said. “But I think it’s safe to say that free-roaming cats will be anywhere there is shelter and a food source.”
Officials said the man found squatting in the building had been trying to care for the animals.
